Statement by juror Sandra Klein

I need to begin by thanking Radiant Aberration and zoneFIVE for inviting me to Jury Day Dreams and Night Lights. The theme to me centers around the inner workings of the mind of the artist, a theme that is central to my work and it’s a theme I find fascinating. It is always difficult to cull 30 images from hundreds and of course, the final decisions are always subjective. Another consideration for an exhibition is that the show must be cohesive, so a wonderful image may just not fit the grouping, which is to say, please don’t be disheartened by a rejection. It’s part of the journey.

When choosing the final images I focused on including both Day Dream and Night Lights images. I first considered composition and execution…the images needed to be fully resolved and speak to the theme. What interested me most were the images that seemed unexpected, a unique and different take on themes that are considered often. I loved that there were so many types of media entered.  Entries included cyanotypes, analog work, digital work, platinum prints, polaroids, and photograms. The images chosen run the gamut of poetic daydreams to magical dark night visions. I’m thrilled with the images chosen for the exhibit at zoneFIVE and believe the online show with augmented work will also be exceptional!
